Collaboration and NewsGator

Sam Gentile comments on NewsGator and collaboration:

BTW, I have been using Greg’s awesome NewsGator for two weeks now and it just rocks! Related to my last collaboration posting, I see this as playing an important part in my collaboration tools. For better, or for worse, Outlook is the center collaboration app of my desktop and probably many other people as well. Maintaining my calendar, tasks, mail, and other plug-ins, it is becoming increasingly the most important app on my desktop. The point is that products that recognize this and integrate with Outlook like Groove will have better success on the desktop. So having Outlook be the center of my blogging makes sense to me too. It makes much more sense for me to read all my feeds in Outlook than it does Radio because that’s where the rest of the information is coming in and can be aggregated together and displayed together. For most of the last two weeks I have stopped using Radio. Reluctantly, I came back when I had to post something. The next step is to combine this with Ingo’s stuff. Then we need to find some combination in there. If I can read and post from Outlook it will be over for Radio.

I totally agree. I run Outlook all day long; I use it for email, contacts, calendar, and even random notes like the confirmation numbers for my hotels and rental cars. With NewsGator, it’s now easy for me to merge weblog posts with email; I can easily forward a post to someone, file it in a folder with some related mail messages, or anything else I want to do with it.

In an earlier post, I responded to another post from Sam and discussed collaboration in the absense of a project. There I hypothesized that the difficulty in getting people to do so is that most only have a limited amount of time to participate in informal, non-business-critical collaboration. I proposed:

Perhaps what we need is a collaboration medium which more effectively aggregates multiple sources into a single “community”.

Well, upon further reflection, one step toward that goal is to have a single tool, which can aggregate existing collaboration mediums together. If I can have a single integrated tool, it reduces the time needed to view these other sources, and I can participate more. Outlook is an excellent tool for collaboration via e-mail and mailing lists; NewsGator extends it to weblogs and other RSS-enabled sources.

And now, I don’t have to make any extra effort to collaborate in the weblog community I participate in. So I read more, learn more, and participate more. And that, I think, is the key.

As a small aside, NewsGator will eventually integrate posting capability (via Blogger API, MetaWeblog API, RestLog API, or others). At least that’s the current plan.

NewsGator v0.6

NewsGator 0.6 is now available. This fixes a few problems:

  • Fixed problem where if default mail format in Outlook 2002 was set to plain text, then bodies of posts would not be correctly displayed.
  • Fixed problem where if user chose to hide the NewsGator toolbar, it would incorrectly show up again the next time Outlook was started.
  • Corrected problem where Outlook 2000 would not shut down completely after NewsGator had retrieved posts.
  • Removed “Test Post” menu item, except when running in debug mode (registry switch).

Also, thanks to Bryce, there is now a XSL transform available to transform OCS files from NewzCrawler into OPML files that NewsGator can import.  I put the XSL file, along with a tool to run it against your OCS file, on the download site.

Keep the comments and suggestions coming!

NewsGator v0.5

Well, it figures…as soon as I drop v0.4 to the web, I get the problem fixed that was nagging at me. This was the problem where the “NewsGatorView” view in Outlook would not be correctly created much of the time, and often would not be correctly applied to news folders. All taken care of now. Note that views are only created when running Outlook 2002.

I was probably the only one who knew about, or even noticed, this problem…but it drove me crazy. :-)

Release 0.5 is now available for download. If you’re upgrading from v0.4, read the release notes on the download site for details on what you should do to get the view working correctly.

NewsGator v0.4 Released!

NewsGator (formerly the Outlook News Aggregator) version 0.4 has been released and may now be downloaded from http://www.rassoc.com/newsgator. This is a major release; a few highlights:

  • NewsGator is an Outlook add-in, fully integrated with Outlook’s user interface.
  • Works with both Outlook 2000 and 2002.
  • Respects online/offline settings in Outlook 2002.
  • Performance has been drastically improved.
  • Now has a subscription management GUI, including the ability to import subscription lists from Aggie, Radio, and other tools.

Download it and give it a try! Please post your experience here, or send to me privately. Thanks!

New Outlook News Aggregator Build

Version 0.2 is now ready! Perfect for those folks who refuse to use a 0.1 version of anything. :-) Here’s a rundown of what’s changed:

  • Improved RSS aggregator – removes numerous problems with certain RSS feeds.
  • Tray icon now changes (lightning bolt) when news is being retrieved.
  • Fixed insertion order of posts, so sorting within Outlook behaves as
    expected.
  • GUI is now responsive during news retrieval operations.
  • A retrieval cannot be triggered when a retrieval is already underway;
this solves some rare duplicate post problems.
  • The check news interval is now saved between sessions.

You can download the application, readme, and release notes here. And as before, please post your experiences!

Outlook News Aggregator Problems Resolved

Whew!  Pretty sure we have this one nailed now.  Many of you were getting a problem where messages would download, but only the title would be shown in Outlook – not the message body.

To fix this, you need to install Office XP Service Pack 2, and then install the December 4, 2002 Outlook 2002 Update.  Both can be found on the Office Update siteYou must install both updates.

I have also added a test application here – if you’re having problems, download it, extract it to the same directory as olnews, and run it.  It’s a console application, and it should add a single message to the “Greg Reinacker’s Weblog” folder.  You can use it to make sure the Outlook integration is working correctly.

Thanks for bearing with me here!  This problem was pretty difficult to reproduce – my development machine is up to date with the Outlook updates, so I never saw the problem until you guys brought it up!

Outlook News Aggregator

Good news! Version 0.1 of the Outlook News Aggregator is now available for download. It requires Outlook 2002 (aka Outlook XP). If you run into any problems, please let me know. Thanks for your interest!

A big thanks to Joe Gregorio – the Outlook aggregator currently uses parts of the excellent Aggie as its RSS engine.

UPDATE (1/15): the links in this post have been removed; my logs indicate version 0.1 is still being downloaded. As of today, the current version is 0.6 – you can find more information and download links at the NewsGator site.
